Licensing Change Coming!
April 16, 2024:
The State Board of Education has approved changes to Colorado Department of Education licensure requirements for Special Service Providers with endorsement in School Social Work (aka "school social workers").
Because of feedback and advocacy from our members, stakeholders, and those involved in SSP licensure workgroups, the State Board of Education has approved the elimination of the ASWB exam requirement for school social work licensing.
This is a major victory for CSSWA and school social workers, particularly given the known ASWB exam disparities for historically marginalized groups and given the minimal connection between the exam and school social work practice. Thank you to all who contacted your State Board members and advocated for this change!
There are a few next steps ahead. Both are anticipated to occur in the coming months, with updates ready to go this summer:
- The Secretary of State must review all State Board of Education rule updates.
- Once reviewed, the new rules will be posted on the website of the Secretary of State. This posting will indicate the official update to the rules.
We anticipate the Colorado Department of Education to share more information on this licensing change once officially updated by the Secretary of State's office.
